At the Americas GP in Austin, Aron Canet finished in fourth place, securing 13 crucial points for the championship standings. Thanks also to the points collected by his teammate Barry Baltus, who crossed the finish line in seventh place, Fantic Racing Lino Sonego is now leading the Moto2 Team Championship.
It was a more challenging weekend than expected in Austin due to uncertain weather conditions. Saturday’s dry qualifying session saw Barry Baltus secure his first front-row start, while Aron Canet qualified in fifth place.
On Sunday morning, teams were greeted by cloudy skies, and just before the Moto2 riders left the pit lane, light rain created uncertainty about tire choice. Both Fantic riders, along with most of the grid, opted for wet tires as the rain started to intensify.
Barry Baltus, declared fit to race after a final medical check, made a strong start from third place, battling for second in the opening laps. He managed his pace well for most of the race, but the tricky track conditions saw him lose a few positions in the latter stages, ultimately finishing seventh. Given that he wasn’t in peak physical condition following his crash at the end of qualifying, it was still a positive result, appreciated by the entire team.
Aron Canet had a solid start from the second row. Throughout the race, he avoided unnecessary risks and focused on securing a top-4 finish to collect valuable points for the Riders’ Championship. He now sits in second in the standings, just 13 points off the lead.
With a total of 22 points scored by Canet and Baltus, after three races, Fantic Racing Lino Sonego now leads the Moto2 Team Championship.
Aron Canet:
"I am happy with the work we did this weekend. It's an important result for the championship, especially considering the track conditions. In these situations, it’s much easier to crash than to reach the finish line, so finishing in the Top 4 feels like a victory."
Barry Baltus:
"It was a very tough race due to the track conditions. It was really hard to make it to the end. For sure, there will be easier race conditions where I’ll be able to fully show my potential. Thanks to the whole team for the great work this weekend, and now we focus on Qatar."
Roberto Locatelli, Fantic Racing Lino Sonego Team Manager:
"It was a great weekend despite the difficulties, on one of the toughest tracks in the championship. Team Fantic Racing Lino Sonego did an amazing job; both riders qualified well, and today we fought for the top 5 positions for most of the race. We finished in fourth place with Canet, which is an excellent result for the championship standings. Baltus finished seventh, making an important step forward. He did a great job considering the tough race conditions, having to race on wet tires while the track was drying. This demonstrates the great competitiveness of the entire team, and it’s important to acknowledge all the people in the company who support us, starting with Mariano Roman, Stefano Bedon, and everyone who enables us to work at our best."
