Canet impresses with dominant Qatar win to move into the lead

At the Lusail International Circuit, Aron Canet delivered an outstanding performance: After an unlucky start, he recovered many positions and secured his first win of the season! Barry Baltus also had a solid ride, finishing sixth, and Fantic Racing Lino Sonego increased its lead in the team standings to 22 points.

Aron Canet has already shown us his resilience, and today he provided further proof. Third on the grid, an unlucky start made him lose ground. Struggling at the launch, he was passed by more than 10 riders. Finding himself down in 12th in turn 1, he didn’t give up, knowing he had a good race pace. And that is exactly what he showed, as he gained positions lap after lap. With 10 laps to go, he moved into third place. A superb overtake in turn 7 allowed him to pass Arenas for second place with 9 laps remaining, immediately closing the gap to leader Oncu to just two-tenths. With 5 laps to go, he took the lead and managed his pace until the end of the race, crossing the finish line over a second ahead.

The Fantic Racing Lino Sonego star now leads the Moto2 World Championship with a 10-point advantage.

His teammate Barry Baltus delivered another solid performance. Starting ninth, he found himself in 15th place after the first lap. From there, he began his comeback, which took him up to fifth place with just five laps remaining. Until the checkered flag, he put on a show with an intense battle for fifth place, making several overtakes. In the end, he had to settle for sixth place, but his progress is evident, and his feeling with the team is growing race by race.

Thanks to Canet’s 25 and Baltus’ 10 points, Fantic Racing Team Lino Sonego extends the lead in the team standings and will head to the next Grand Prix in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, with a 22-point advantage.

Aron Canet:

"It was tough after the bad start, but lap by lap I focused on recovering positions while managing the tires, which was difficilt. During the race, I felt like the Aron from the end of last year. When I returned to the top positions, I was happy, but I wanted to win. I felt good with the bike. Now, let's enjoy the moment and already think about Jerez, because the season is long."

Barry Baltus:

"It was a good Sunday, we were very competitive. Too bad about the start. After the bad luck in qualifying, starting ninth and then finding myself further back was not easy. But I felt I could be fast, and I gave it 100%. I thank the Team for the great work this weekend. Congratulations to Aron for the win, and now we focus on the European races."

Roberto Locatelli, Fantic Racing Lino Sonego Team Manager:

"It was a fantastic weekend for the entire Fantic Racing Lino Sonego Team. We built the victory, starting from Thursday, analyzing the track to study the lines, reviewing past races, and choosing the tire for the race between Friday evening and Saturday morning. We were fast in qualifying to start well, but it wasn't enough. Aron is the only one who, after a start like today's, can recover like he did and be so decisive. We were the fastest, and we made the difference. With Baltus, we had a great race and gained a lot of experience, which will be useful. We also made the right tire choice for him, advising him well, and he thanked us. As Fantic Racing Lino Sonego Team, we're already focused on tackling the Jerez weekend in the best possible way."
